Pimobendan Chewable Tablets

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS

Pimobendan

INDICATIONS FOR USE

Used for the treatment of canine congestive heart failure caused by insufficiency of heart valves (mitral and/or tricuspid regurgitation) or dilated cardiomyopathy. It is used for the treatment of preclinical dilated cardiomyopathy in large dogs (asymptomatic, diagnosed by echocardiography with enlarged left ventricular end-systolic and end-diastolic diameters). It is used for the treatment of preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease in dogs (asymptomatic systolic mitral valve murmur and cardiac enlargement), and to delay the occurrence of clinical symptoms of congestive heart failure

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Measured in pimobenzene. Oral administration: 0.25mg per 1kg of body weight for dogs, twice a day. For dogs weighing approximately 10 kilograms, give half a 5mg chewable tablet in the morning and half in the evening respectively. For dogs weighing approximately 20 kilograms, a 5mg chewable tablet was given in the morning and evening respectively.
Food can be consumed one hour after administration. Diuretics (such as furosemide) can be used in combination. Long-term continuous administration can be given to dogs with congestive heart failure

SPECIFICATION

Pevet Pimobendan Cardiac Chews – Inodilator for Canine CHF and DCM, Including Senior Dogs (24 Tablets)

Introduction

Canine Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) and Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) are serious cardiac conditions affecting dogs, particularly middle-aged to senior dogs. Left unmanaged, they severelyan Cardiac Chews** represent a scientifically formulated solution designed specifically to manage and improve cardiac function in dogs suffering from these conditions. As a dual-action inodilator, it combines inotropic (heart muscle contracting) and vasodilating (blood vessel widening) properties to enhance heart efficiency and circulation.

Mechanism of Action: Inodilator Therapy

Pimobendan, the active ingredient in Pevet Cardiac Chews (5mg per chewable tablet), works through a unique mechanism:

  1. Phosphodiesterase III Inhibition: Increases intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), leading to improved calcium sensitivity within cardiac myocytes.
  2. Enhanced: This potentiation results in stronger ventricular contractions without significantly increasing oxygen demand.
  3. Peripheral Vasodilation: Simultaneously, it promotes vasodilation in systemic and pulmonary arterial vessels, reducing vascular resistance (afterload) and the workload on the heart. This dual action makes it a cornerstone therapy for managing CHF due to valve insufficiency and DCM.

Indications for Use

Pevet Pimobendan Cardiac Chews are indicated for:

  • Treatment of Overt CHF: Specifically, congestive heart failure in dogs caused by mitral valve insufficiency, tricuspid regurgitation, or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).
  • Treatment of Preclinical Heart Disease:
    • In Large-Breed Dogs with Preclinical DCM: Asymptomatic dogs diagnosed via echocardiography showing left ventricular dilation during systole and diastole.
    • In Dogs with Preclinical Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD): Asymptomatic dogs presenting with an audible left-sided systolic heart murmur and evidence of cardiac enlargement on radiographs or echocardiography. Critical Objective: To delay the onset of congestive heart failure and associated clinical symptoms.

Target Canine Population

This therapy is vital for:

  • Senior dogs commonly affected by degenerative valve disease.
  • Middle-aged to older large-breed dogs predisposed to DCM.
  • All breeds experiencing symptomatic or high-risk preclinical heart conditions warranting targeted cardiac support.
  • Dogs requiring a palatable, easy-to-administer medication format to improve long-term compliance.

Pharmacodynamics and Clinical Significance

  • Acceptable Diet Management: Food can be consumed 1 hour post-administration, enhancing owner convenience.
  • Compatibility: Pimobendan can be effectively combined with other essential cardiac medications, particularly diuretics like furosemide, for comprehensive CHF management. Combination therapy addresses fluid overload alongside core cardiac dysfunction.
  • Long-Term Use: Pevet Pimobendan Chews are designed for chronic, continuous administration in diagnosed cases of CHF, providing sustained support.

Dosage & Administration

Precise dosing is essential for efficacy and safety:

  • Dose Calculation: Administer 0.25mg pimobenzene per kilogram (kg) of the dog's body weight (0.25 mg/kg), twice daily (every 12 hours).
  • Practical Dosing Guide based on Tablet Strength (5mg):
    • ~10kg Dog: Administer ½ chewable tablet (approx. 2.5mg) in both the morning and evening.
    • ~20kg Dog: Administer one whole chewable tablet (5mg) in the morning and one in the evening.
  • Veterinary Oversight: Always adhere to the dosage regimen prescribed by a licensed veterinarian following thorough cardiac assessment.
